This winter trip is ideal for beginners to ski touring and winter mountaineering who wish to get started and become independent with ski touring and mountaineering in mountainous regions in the winter.

Participants must be competent skiers on a ski slope but no previous ski touring or winter mountaineering experience is necessary. Participants need to be reasonably fit as this is an intensive 5-day course in the mountains in winter.

ITINERARY

Travel independently and meet Climbing Tuition instructors at a central point in Banska Bystrica (see map below). You will be met and at 5pm driven to your accommodation in Riečka. Evening meal together to meet the team and go through the week’s activities.

Head to Chopok with time to pick up rental ski touring equipment. Today is about introductory sessions to ski touring on the Low Tetras mountain range. Evening meal together in Banska Bystrica. Accommodation in Riečka.

Today is the chance to learn about mountaineering. Skills taught and practiced include the use of crampons, ice axe rescue, emergency shelters, and transceivers. Tonight we stay in a mountain hut (Popradské Pleso).

These two days will be guided ski touring in the mountains with mountain huts being our accommodation for both nights. Exact location dependent on the weather and ability of the group.

Our final full day together. Today’s activities are very much dependent on the mountain weather conditions and ability of the group, but today we have the option of ice climbing or mountaineering. Accommodation is back in Riečka near Banska Bystrica.

Morning breakfast and then you will be taken back to Banska Bystrica town centre, approximately 15 minutes from accommodation, for your onward journey.

Comprehensive information will be provided upon booking.

First 2 nights will be in a private house at the edge of a picturesque village called Riecka near Banska Bystrica. The accommodation is in two connected rooms on a dorm basis.
The other 3 nights will be in mountain hut called Popradske Pleso (image below), also on the basis of shared dorm rooms.

As an optional extra after the last day of ski touring or ice climbing, you can stay in High Tatras Stary Smokovec and book yourself into relaxing spa hotel.

All specialist equipment will be provided for you. No need for winter mountaineering boots as we can use the boots hired for the ski touring for winter mountaineering.
