ROCK CLIMBING TRIPS UK
Southern Sandstone which includes Harrison’s Rocks and Bowls is the closest outdoor climbing to London, located just 1.5 hours away near Tunbridge Wells, Kent. It is an ideal first experience for outdoor climbing in the London area. Rock climbing in Kent is truly beautiful.
Climbing is performed on 8 to 15 meter outcrops. The rocks are protected due to their ‘soft’ formation, so lead climbing isn’t possible as it would damage the rock. All climbing is done on a top rope, which allows for a safe, fun day out, and a taste of what ‘real rock climbing’ is about.
The cost is £95 per person
What is included
- A full day of climbing instruction and tuition
- Transport to and from the venue
(Drop-off and pick-up locations can be arranged to meet the needs of each client)
- Equipment (ropes, belay devices, slings, karabiners, helmets and harnesses)
The Aim of the course
The course aims to teach you how to climb on a real rock, how to set the ropes up if you want to return to Harrison’s rock without an instructor, how to use and interpret a climbing book, and how to protect the rock.
What you will need
- Climbing shoes (we can supply these, but we strongly recommend that you have your own as you will enjoy the climbing much more)
- Harness and helmet (we can supply)
- Food and drink
- Lots of energy to last you the whole day
What happens if it’s too wet
If it is too wet to climb outside the session will run at one of London’s climbing walls, where you will learn how to lead climb – a key outdoor climbing skill to enable you to climb when there is no top rope.
The lead climber will attach themselves to a length of rope and climb, periodically attaching protection to the face of the route and clipping in to it. Once the first clip has been placed, the belayer must hold the rope in the event of a fall and also pay out rope as the lead climber ascends.
Experience of lead climbing is critical for outdoor climbing where top ropes are not available. It will open you up to more climbing opportunities and technical routes.
